You need to right-click on the desktop and unlock widgets, make your changes and then right-click and lock again.
This is only true if you're making changes to the _configuration_ or _placement_ of the Desktop widget, *not* if you're trying to add a link to an application or a link to a directory to the Desktop widget. Generally to add any shortcut to the Desktop widget, you simply drag/drop and click Link in the little context menu that pops up - note, you do *not* have to unlock the widget to drag/drop. I've tested on my KDE4.3.1 install and dragging an icon from the KMenu to the Desktop works, as does dragging files, and folders. Mariusz suggested an alternative method which should also work... but like I said simply dragging teh icong from the KMenu to the desktop should work. Thomas, I think we need more information about what you mean when you said "The shortcut winds up on the desktop alright - but not in the"transparent, movable area." How is your desktop configured? (Right click on the desktop and select Desktop Settings. Is your Desktop Activity set to "Desktop", "Folder View" or "Plain Desktop"?
