This is **my** experience: if (big IF) the kb overall is not responsive, but at least I can do Ctlr-Alt-F1, then "ps -ax" allows me to kill the roguish application, but if the freeze is such that *even* Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work (I've had quite a few of those!), then the power button is the only escape.
If you are networked try to ssh to the box and look around. If you can't even ping it, it's time for the power button. If you can ping the box sometimes it takes a LOOOOONG time to recover, but in most cases it can be done.
