Greetings,
I wonder if we could ask one of the guru's to list the processes and differences in creating kernals etc. across 2.4 and earlier and 2.6 (and hopefully later).
such as "make prepare" instead of "make dep"
or is there a mini-how-to somewhere?
as one who rarely has to, but does work on various systems with different kernals I would like to have a "cheat-sheet" but don't believe i'm proficent enough to create it myself.
with many thanks

"make dep" is not part of 2.6, everything else is the same with both kernels. The README file and Documentation subdirectory in the kernel source directory contains most of the useful information needed. There is no substitute for experience in building kernels, it's one of the easier tasks once you overcome your natural nervousness. The one policy I adopt, is to give all kernels a different name if they are the same source, e.g if they are both 2.6.9-rc1-mm3, make a copy like "cp linux-2.6.9-rc1-mm3 linux-2.6.9-rc1-mm3-2", I'll alter the EXTRAVERSION in the Makefile to 2.6.9-rc1-mm3-2, so I can leave the previous stuff untouched in case there is some problem with the newly built kernel, also I copy the bzImage to /boot as other than vmlinuz, 2.6.9-rc1-mm3-2 or whatever label takes your fancy.
