I must suggest to you that you either build your samba from source code. Compile them at home. It usually means to download the tar.gz file, use tar zxvf file.tar.gz cd <created-dir> /configure make and if everything is fine so far, then do as root make install This should install samba for you. Copy the relevant options from your existing smb.conf to the new smb.conf, start samba and it should be okay for you. But what I must suggest to you, is that you upgrade your system. Do not install X on it. Or even if you install it, run it without X windows. You might need some libs, but you do not need to use X for running samba. As you have 7.1, I presume this machine is not a 2 GHz P4 or Athlon. Newer samba, shall help you.
