I am looking for help eliminating an annoying interaction between firefox and the gnome control center.
You need to start /opt/gnome2/bin/gnome-settings-daemon when you start X. This will make Firefox's fonts and the rest display correctly. You're not realizing that Gnome 2's control center is starting this daemon and it continues to run after the control center is closed. So just start this prog at the start of X and you'll be fine. It doesn't take lots of resources for it to be running and you'll be much happier. :)
Bingo! This did it. But it is on my 9.1 gnome 2.8 installation at /opt/gnome/lib/control-center-2.0/gnome-settings-daemon Thanks, Henry
