I had similar experience with KDM when I compiled my own kernel 2.6.8.1. KDE would consistently crash after boot. I switched to XDM
Oops, I meant KDM would consistently crash after boot. I could launch KDE fine from XDM and KDE worked fine.
(plain but works) and XDM worked fine.
In /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager, change to xdm as follows:
DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm"
