Thanks for your efforts and the efforts of others.
The example above refers to initd stuff. All my /etc/init.d/rcblah.d/ are empty, as might be expected in a systemd world.
Seems fruitless to attempt to adapt it to the systemd world as I've not been able to get fetchmail to start with systemctl start fetchmail.service from last time I attempted it a year or so ago. It runs without comment but does not start.
Attempting to glean information from the internet in that regard has proven problematic. most of it ends up referring to initd and not systemd or ends up being essentially gibberish to someone not already familiar with the writers "argot".
Perhaps there are some working examples of the appropriate systemd files for starting and stopping fetchmail in daemon mode with .fetchmailrc in a place of my choosing?
I assume that systemd service will only cater to /etc/fetchmailrc and ignore any .fetchmailrc

I may have tried /etc/fetchmailrc when first trying to setup to start via systemd. IIRC that would start fetchmail but without verbose logging and timestamps. I encountered some very rude comments when I attempted to add options such as verbose So, I said, "nice meeting you" and accepted starting fetchmail manually. Until now I saw no real need to try again. joe a.
