Ah, thank you very much for this. And my apologies for forgetting to
check the archive first. I can confidently say I won't find a
solution--the device is going to be returned to the store tomorrow.
Pity, it seemed like a nice idea, but I'll stick to digitizing from
analog tape recordings for now.
Thanks for replying.
Cheers,
Simon

Hi all (happy holidays :),
Has anyone used an Olympus VN480PC Voice Recorder on SuSE 9.3? I'm mostly accustomed to USB devices just appearing in the filesystem and working without any fuss. However, this thing has a USB port, and shows up in /proc/usb/bus/devices, but doesn't show up in the filesystem.
If anyone knows anything about the device (or other similar ones) I'd much appreciate the info.
And I'd appreciate any guidance about any other pocket recorders

Simon, I posted the same inquiry here about 6 weeks ago.You can find the discussions in the archives.
I also spoke directly with Olympus tech support -- even got hold of a guy who uses Linux. He said that the device requires a Windows driver and will not work without it. He told me there is no way to transfer the files from the VN480 to Linux PC.
Also got a response post here on SuSE list from a fellow in Germany who read the output I sent him from my Konsole, and he confirmed that it requires a special driver.
Even though it is USB it is not "plug and play" in the way you might find your digital camera or a card reader.
So, sadly, there does not seem to be any way to use the USB feature of the 480PC. You can't transfer the voice recordings to a Linux PC.
Now, if you EVER find a way to do it PLEASE post the solution to this
list! :o) Thx Gil
