MS apps are renowned for causing problems in Wine. If these are your main need, you could look at CrossoverOffice from Codeweavers. This is a tweaked version of Wine (changes fed back to the source tree) with some extra software so that MSOffice etc. will install. However, it does cost money, although you can get a demo if you ask nicely. But it does allow MSOffice to work almost perfectly in Linux (i.e. about as well as they do in Windows).
