So far the only thing I have been able to get to run with Wine is "notepad". Notepad will only work if I have wine running in Desktop mode. I have tried M$ Project 2000, M$ Word XP, M$ Excel XP plus a couple of other apps but no success. I am using a fake windows installation as you can see from the config file below. MS apps are renowned for causing problems in Wine. If these are your main need, you could look at CrossoverOffice from Codeweavers. This is a tweaked version of Wine (changes fed back to the source tree) with some extra software so that MSOffice etc. will install. However, it does cost money, although you can get a demo if you ask nicely. But it does allow MSOffice to work almost perfectly in Linux (i.e. about as well as they do in Windows). Try a demo of CodeWeaver's "cross-over" products. I understand that it works very well. Also, the running in "Desktop mode" issue may have to do with your X config, or wine config, or both. Do a google search and see if you can't find out about other programs that run. I'm running some games in the default wine. Some run very well, some run really slow (like seconds per frame vs. frames per second), and other won't run at all. See, it also depends on how a particular program was coded and the particular system calls/protocols it makes/needs. All in all the cross-over stuff from codeweavers is your best bet for using the M$ Office and IE stuff, and to be honest has the M$ guys really bothered (hehe) because it works so well. Perhaps too well, I've heard mention that virus attacks on Outlook can work under Wine too.
Perhaps just making an ISO image of the wine directory in a pristine state before and after install the Office/outluck/ie stuff and if infected replacing it with the image. Of course backing up mail, projects, etc.. must be done carefully since reinstalling stuff that is infected puts you back to square one. I find it funny that the M$ stuff is just as vunerable regardless of what environment it's in - lol. I also find some irony to the fact that one can have a M$ targeted infection on a Linux wine installation. Face it, M$ products = please hack me. The excellent newsreaders Agent and FreeAgent run "almost perfectly" with Wine. It dosn't display images, but the threading, posting, and text aspects are great. There are some glitches in cut'n'paste too, but nothing you can't deal with. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

You might have more luck with Office 2000 or Office 97. Even Codeweaver's CrossoverOffice doesn't support Office XP. As for your other applications, did you install them into the fake Windows directory or are you trying to run them from a Windows partition? Usually SuSE doesn't give users executable rights on mounted Windows partitions.
I moved .exe files from the windoze partition to the fake area. Then tried to run them with wine. I read that wine would then automagically retrieve the necessary DLLs; is this not correct? D.C. I'd rather use StarOffice but the boss says M$. Donald Grayson wrote:

Not exactly. If the DLLs are present in the correct place in the fakewindows, wine will use them, but many programs also require their own special settings in the registration database, and those will only be present, if you have actually run the installation program in wine. Copying the .exe file is not enough for such programs. Regards Ole
