I need ntp server for my house network with no permanent internet connection to Internet (only occasional dialup).
What app to do this ? I know for xntpd, but can I use it for my purpose ?
Exactly my case; this is what I do: In the pc that does the dialing (asuming it is a linux on - what else!) Edit /etc/ntp.conf and add your servers lines there (more than one): server whatever.domain Then add this to your /etc/ppp/ip-up.local file rcxntpd ntptimeset hwclock --systohc You probably also prefer to edit /etc/sysconfig/xntp as well; you probably will have: XNTPD_INITIAL_NTPDATE="AUTO-2" change it to: XNTPD_INITIAL_NTPDATE="AUTO" If you have a number there, it will only call the first "n" servers listed in /etc/ntp.conf, instead of all of them and calculate which one is the best of all. This only takes effect for "rcxntpd ntptimeset", or if called when booting, nothing else. Notice that this call normally steps the clock suddenly, not as the daemon which slews the clock slowly. But it is the only practical way for us, not having a permanent network connection. As an aside, I only do this routine once for every five connections - I think I will modify it to operate only if not used for a period of, say, two hours. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
