If one of those processes is Firefox, check with top. You'll likely find that (plugin-handler?) is consuming 100+% cpu, and just killing it instantly speeds up everything else, including Firefox.
Here on 11.2 it's plugin-containe, which seems more often to consume more RAM than CPU. Won't killing it destruct function of Flash objects loaded in various tabs? Sure. But flash is not highly important to me anyhow, and if a flash
