AFAIK, the dropdown list only contains connectoin specific info, not hardware info. To do what you want, I would suggest going to Configure, Device and use the /dev/ttySx device instead of changing the symlink. You could leave the symlink alone. I use /dev/ttyS2 for mine, not /dev/modom.
The problem with doing that is, neither device is listed. My internal modem is /dev/ttySHSF0 & my external device is /dev/ttyUSB0. Consequently, I have to assign one or the other to /dev/modem when I want to use one of them. Since I am having less than good luck w/kinternet I thought this might be the easiest 'out'. ...CH
