I have been compiling most of my apps that are available as source and I currently run an "old faithful" AMD K6-2/400 3DNow processor. Seems it is slow as the apps are growing in source, etc., and even though the bus speed is 100Mhz on an Asus P5A with 320megs PC100 RAM, and a 7500rpm EIDE, a UW SCSI bus with UW periph's, all in all, the processor seems to be the anchor under SuSE 7.0 ? With all the latest chip improvements, what's a good MB/processor combo for a current Linux distribution with general requirements ?
You don't say what your idea of general requirements are but I'll suggest just getting the chip that's second from the bottom price wise. Just make sure you get a fairly good motherboard. Around here that looks like either a 600 Celeron or a 650 Duron. A year from now the extra money you might spend today on a midrange chip would get you the then low end chip which should be a fair bit faster then your current setup. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it-)) Nick
