If currently you have four GB in swap, be assured that_your_ system needs it now and works better with it.
At the moment top shows 624 MiB free and System Monitor shows 13.1 GiB memory and 5.5 swap used.. System is responsive and there's little disk activity. It will continue on like this for some time, at which point there will be a lot of disk activity and CPU will be pretty much pegged. At the moment CPU activity, on all 8 cores, is about 15-20%, with peaks to 25%. The disk LED flashes occasionally. This is with VirtualBox running, along with several browser windows, a couple of PDFs in Okular, email and Amarok playing music..
