I indentified the same issue in SUSE 9.0 and SUSE 9.1, in suse 9.0 I founded several cron jobs defunt, that consumes a lot of I/O. Just I revived the initab and solved it.
On 9.1 the problem becamoe from the PowerSAVE sometimes, seen to be defunt and the system never wake up from fin throulling after 24 Hours, seens to be after a cron jobs runnung, just powersave restart and solved.

My SuSE installation has been up & active for 24 hours. Now, applications are starting to slow down & some become totally unresponsive.
Check with "top" which applications eat your CPU time. Also check on the load average (shown in "top").
It could be a simple thing like a browser with a java applet eating all your CPU time. A process that is causing heavy disk I/O could also be the cause.
Maybe there's a cron job running (like updatedb).
