The version of the visor module (which handles PalmOS connections) supplied with 8.0 doesn't know about the Zire (they were produced after it was). The fix is reasonably simple - install the kernel sources from your discs, insert a couple of lines into visor.h and visor.c, and recompile the module. The detailed instructions are available on the net (I found the details as kernel.org, IIRC). Alternatively, you could upgrade to 8.2, which contains a sufficiently up-to-date visor module.
