Which means that your system *really* needs swap. The thread is long, I still have not seen your figures.
But as far as I can see from what I have read so far, attempts to reduce swapines will make the situation worse in your case.
And yes, your system bogs down as more swap is used, because modern swap can not cope when set on rotating rust. You need to move it to an SSD disk.
I have mentioned memory & swap usage a couple of times. When I posted yesterday, with:
Yes, you have mentioned it. I want to see command output instead of your words.
"I'm running 15.1 & KDE. One thing I've noticed is swap use increases through time, even though I'm not even using all the real memory. Eventually, it gets to the point where my system bogs down and can become unusable. At the moment, I'm running 13.6 GiB of 15.6 memory and 4.1 of 24 swap. Why should swap be used at all, when there's still a significant amount of free memory? "
I was runnig VirtualBox, which is configured to use 8 GB.
So, your system had 8 GiB available, not 16. Similar status to my system with 8 GiB available and swapping heavily. top display sorted by "SWAP": top - 20:33:58 up 12 days, 6:48, 1 user, load average: 0,62, 0,81, 0,76 Tasks: 479 total, 2 running, 476 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie %Cpu(s): 2,1 us, 0,8 sy, 0,3 ni, 96,2 id, 0,6 wa, 0,0 hi, 0,0 si, 0,0 st KiB Mem : 8161256 total, 1960292 free, 5420404 used, 780560 buff/cache KiB Swap: 25165820 total, 20751732 free, 4414088 used. 2129424 avail Mem PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR SWAP S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 11223 cer 20 0 3883488 511440 93280 202884 S 3,274 6,267 84:14.16 Web Content 4992 cer 39 19 963220 26644 3252 190496 S 0,000 0,326 0:55.20 tracker-miner-f 5927 vscan 20 0 1113320 704716 4492 181520 S 0,000 8,635 9:07.82 clamd 11145 cer 20 0 3452964 228804 65024 174048 S 1,190 2,804 31:08.62 Web Content 5844 cer 20 0 4990712 1,708g 81260 170336 S 0,000 21,94 63:51.95 thunderbird-bin 11198 cer 20 0 3752028 325884 64352 154768 S 1,190 3,993 192:53.42 Web Content 2255 named 20 0 501180 33632 5268 134612 S 0,000 0,412 0:17.07 named 8921 cer 20 0 3658964 188504 56576 129396 S 0,298 2,310 10:12.05 firefox 11180 cer 20 0 3240976 228932 42308 91500 S 0,000 2,805 5:13.81 Web Content 3948 root 20 0 214388 2936 2340 85976 S 0,000 0,036 0:00.20 spamd child 3949 root 20 0 214388 2968 2340 85944 S 0,000 0,036 0:00.16 spamd child 3944 root 20 0 214388 6736 5260 85096 S 0,000 0,083 0:22.90 spamd 11031 cer 20 0 4115616 461260 138548 80988 S 0,595 5,652 50:54.62 firefox 9060 cer 20 0 2967568 153376 56080 79528 S 0,893 1,879 24:02.97 Web Content 2280 mysql 20 0 1885328 4644 4644 73132 S 0,000 0,057 0:54.37 mysqld 9006 cer 20 0 2949816 89724 25816 71244 S 0,298 1,099 24:47.55 Web Content 9085 cer 20 0 2847372 101404 29228 69504 S 0,595 1,243 20:31.11 Web Content 9042 cer 20 0 2848780 79296 35912 68052 S 0,595 0,972 15:57.69 Web Content 4974 cer 39 19 2846584 21156 4564 60904 S 0,000 0,259 0:21.43 tracker-extract 5990 vscan 20 0 192460 5944 5044 59724 S 0,000 0,073 0:02.53 /usr/sbin/amavi 4082 root 20 0 661460 153056 120272 57828 S 0,595 1,875 19:47.05 X 4400 cer 20 0 1048084 49404 9984 44764 S 0,298 0,605 5:41.71 xfce4-terminal 9123 cer 20 0 2659232 23960 8560 40436 S 0,000 0,294 0:18.12 WebExtensions 5263 cer 20 0 679968 8888 4220 39492 S 0,000 0,109 0:15.12 gnote 2480 vscan 20 0 193900 29588 5860 36920 S 0,000 0,363 0:00.76 /usr/sbin/amavi 2576 vscan 20 0 193996 29612 5816 36872 S 0,000 0,363 0:00.35 /usr/sbin/amavi 9459 cer 20 0 2639636 4712 3540 35184 S 0,000 0,058 0:00.91 Web Content 4097 colord 20 0 340960 2452 2452 34832 S 0,000 0,030 0:00.86 colord 11277 cer 20 0 26,724g 103100 20304 34180 S 0,000 1,263 3:18.31 WebExtensions top display sorted by "RES": top - A bit less is free, 800MiB in buffers/cache, thanks to the kernel sending unused portions to swap. You can see that this instant Thunderbird has 1.7 GiB of RAM, a huge application. BUT, my machine is perfectly usable, thanks to swap being in SSD, not rotating rust - simply because searching for the chunks of memory swapped out means moving the disk head a lot. Now post yours. Data, not your interpretations, please :-) -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.1 x86_64 at Telcontar)
