I installed 8.1 in my inspiron 5000 and I get a little icon which looks like a battery with a red "X" in top of it. It says that Power Managemet tools are not available. The first time I installed I choose the "install" option from the menu, after that I installed it again with the "install acpi". Am I missing something?
Same thing happened to me when I installed in on my T20 and T23. This is not windows that you constantly have to reinstall. Why don't you just say: acpi=off apm=on, in your grub menu.lst and if you didn't install apmd just run the yast2 module and choose install software. ACPI in 2.4 kernels leaves much to be desired. I rather run APM on 2.4. -- Peace can only come as a natural consequence of universal enlightenment. -Dr. Nikola Tesla
