Some video drivers in XFree86 may be problematic. Check e.g. http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/RELNOTES3.html. You may try to decrease the frequency, resolution, ... and write a bug report. But the easiest way is to buy a graphics adapter which is known to work OK. (Well, this is not applicable to notebooks.) -- A.M.
