'fdisk -l /dev/hdb' will show you the partitions. Mounting a partition read-only ('mount -o ro ...') should not cause further damage to the filesystem, if there is a problem in the first place. In case you are using LVM you'll have to set it up first (vgscan, vgchange, etc.) before you can do mounts or fscks. HTH Michael
