You may have to upgrade your bios from the Dell website. It is quite easy. Just enter your service tag, it will give you all upgrades and patches including the bios. Art Robert Sweet wrote:

I installed 8.1 in my inspiron 5000 and I get a little icon which looks like a battery with a red "X" in top of it. It says that Power Managemet tools are not available. The first time I installed I choose the "install" option from the menu, after that I installed it again with the "install acpi". Am I missing something?

You need to use APM not ACPI, Dell Bioses don't work with ACPI.
