Hi, that's the answer. I took out the Nvidia packages described and rebooted, and now things work again. lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display' shows that nouveau is once again the video driver. I'm not sure why those Nvidia packages were installed while doing an update, but now that they are gone everything is back to normal. [...]
