Hi, Could you possibly post back where on the Xfree list you saw the reported success? A friend of mine just got one and is having a difficult time getting it setup (Radeon 9000 Pro - w/DVI and all that). 2D support isn't even coming up yet. It defaults to FBdev, but that's not quite acceptable compared to having a fully working Voodoo3 2000 :-) Thanks for any info. - Greg On Tue, 2002-09-03 at 14:53, Patrick wrote:

ATi has planed to develop 1 driver for all it's video card since last year. It's like the nVidia driver.
Oh no! Not another binary only driver! We've had more than enough problems with nvidias drivers (latest gag is, that modelines accepted by the nv driver are rejected by the nvidia driver) so I'm *not* enjoyed to see another of those *%$#*% appearing.
Yes, I know that much knowhow goes into developing 3d drivers but this is Linux and not Windows. At least I will definitely *not* let a binary only driver run under Linux, period.

For those interested in the ATI Radeon 9000 card, I just ran across a mention of it on the XFree86 list. Seems the 9000 will run quite well with Linux, although your 3d will not be the best it can be. The reply to the question of using the 9000 card was to set it up as the 8500. Use the same IDs and such and the card will make you very happy! Now this is for XFree86 v4.2 and if you want even better support, you can compile from the CVS. As it turns out though the Radeon 9000 is going to be a sweet little card and it will work nicely now, but with limitations in 3d as the 8500 does presently.
