Can anyone provide an answer, please, to what the future of KDE is considering that gnome has gone #3 but will not be used in such a distro as Ubuntu, to be replaced by Unity. And I don't know what the future holds for openSUSE. Gnome is still basically the desktop in Ubuntu. The Shell is now Unity instead of the Gnome 3 shell. see:

It's still gtk+ underneath. Plus, you can change to Gnome Shell fairly easily in 11.04 from what I have read.
What's the future of KDE in openSUSE, will it remain and be in place for at least several years or be replaced with something like Unity or Gnome #3 in the foreseeable future or within 6 months time (whichever comes first)? (Reason for asking is that I don't want to invest time and effort in getting KDE in 11.4 configured only to find that KDE will be replaced with something as unproductive as gnome 3 or Unity.) KDE has been the main desktop in openSUSE/S.u.S.E. since like v5.x, so I doubt they are planning to move away from it at all. Especially with all the work that's went into KDE4. KDE3 -> KDE4 was more of a change than Unity/Gnome Shell. KDE4 adopted qt4 which is a completely re-written lib system while both Unity/Gnome Shell use GTK+ just like LXDE and Xfce.
At least that's how I understand it.
Thanks Larry - this has diminished my concerns. Re Unity and Ubuntu, as far as I know - pretty certain actually...but I may have misread what was stated - is that come Ubuntu 11.10 (in six months time) there will not be any trace of gnome - it'll be all Unity.
