I've been compiling the kernel now for three years, and I must say I'm still doing a bunch of guessing. Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to do it in a more informed way? How do I determine the hardware support I should include? For example I have an AHA-2940. How do I know which SCSI options other than the obvious AIC7xxx to choose. Some of these options seem to depend on the additional chips I may have hiding on the various boards in my system. It seems a bit haphazard to try to read all the codes off the chips and try to corelate them to the kernel options. And then there are the "choose this if you have an ABC-123 conforming device" options.
Well I'd suggest starting with the docs included with the kernel. Also it helps to know exactly what is in your system. For my other machine which includes an NCR based SCSI card I need to use the older driver because it's an older card. So just choosing the right card isn't enough. It helps to know the revision. There is a bunch of info under /proc . Nick
