So the question is why Novell does not provide version 5 in the update repo. There must be a good reason, like incompatibilities with add ons.
The "good reason" is that we used to have a policy to avoid version upgrades. Since Thunderbird 3.1 up to now still got security updates there was no real reason to update to something newer. openSUSE is no rolling release yet. So either people opt in to get newer versions by adding the mozilla repo or they will get the update only when needed for some reason.
