Could you also supply the make/model of the graphics card? You might also try using a little more ram, even if it is only for the install.
This is an old system that uses on board graphics, it doesn't even have a slot for a AGP slot on the mother board. It does seem like it may be something of a ram issue though. I tried upping the ram with a 256mb stick from another box, and now the total recognized ram is 319mb, but the result is still the same.
I also tried installing CENT OS, and it installed without any problem. If all else fails I'll leave it with CENT OS, which is not nearly as slick looking as Suse, but at least it will work.
You can always use one of the pci slots for a graphics card to test where the problem resides. It does not have to be one that uses a AGP slot.
I went back to one of the earlier comments and used the text install mode in lieu of VESA. (pressing F2 at the Install screen gives a pull down menu option of VESA or TEXT. Even though the text mode was pretty clunky - especially package selection, it installed without a problem. Yast seems to run fine once it's installed also. I'll consider this a problem solved.
thanks to everyone for the their input

Hi Regis, just one more idea comes to mind.. I had a similar problem with test installation of SLES9 on a dell box. The PC had a on-board gfx, too. ( think it was some intel gfx chip ) Even the ncurses-mode seemed a bit "clunky" (so, that's why I come to this idea). The solution was to fix a BIOS setting which reserved only 1MB Video Mem and I switched this option to 8MB (even if this chip may use 16MB, there were only 2 options). Maybe this is too late now, or does not fit here, but I thought this might help.. Markus
