I have suse70 on a removable ide hard drive in my lab computer at college. I want to use it at home and in two other labs at school. All machines at the college have IDE drives and use dhcp to connect to their server on the LAN. At home, I use dial up to my isp and a static IP address on my LAN, an ide hard drive controller to boot, but, have a scsi cd, scanner and zip drive. Oh, also different monitors on all machines. Can it be done? Has it been done? Kind of like the Windoze hardware config boot menu?
Some aspect of this could be accomplished perhaps creating another runlevel for each of the configs. I don't think this would work in reality, unless you want to spend a lot of time writing scripts to replace many of the configuration files, etc. You can't really do this in Windows, since the hardware configurations just enable or disable certain devices - you can't have two graphics cards in two different configurations and select one or the other at will, or have the hardware configuration determine which IP address to use. Windows hardware configurations are not designed for that, and it is not really possible under Linux either. You'ld need different X config files, network config files, etc. You may be able to cobble something together using runlevels, but it won't be very robust.
