Hi! Today I got my SuSE Pro8.1 CDs and installed it on my desktop. It is a fresh install on the second hard disk. My partition setup: /dev/hdb1 101089 /boot /dev/hdb2 257476 swap /dev/hdb3 8262068 / /dev/hdb5 5162796 /home /dev/hdb6 2071384 /usr/local The installation went quite smoothly, except the Grub. Since we always use the NT-loader + lilo method, I prefer the lilo. Unfortunately I did not find such an option before the installation, so that I choose to install grub into the floppy disk to test it. But after the installation finished, I was prompted to insert a floppy to create the boot disk. But after all that I can not boot with that floppy disk, the computer tried to read the folppy but then give up, and the NT loader menu appears. I have checked my BIOS setup, floppy disk boot is enabled . Then I boot the Linux System with CD and check the /boot/grub/menu.list, it is : # Modified by YaST2. Last modification on Wed Oct 23 20:28:07 2002 gfxmenu (hd1,0)/boot/message color white/blue black/light-gray default 0 timeout 8 title linux kernel (hd1,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb3 vga=791 initrd (hd1,0)/boot/initrd title windows 1 root (hd0,0) makeactive chainloader +1 title windows 2 root (hd0,1) makeactive chainloader +1 title failsafe kernel (hd1,0)/boot/vmlinuz.shipped root=/dev/hdb3 ide=nodma apm=off acpi=off vga=normal nosmp maxcpus=0 disableapic 3 initrd (hd1,0)/boot/initrd.shipped and my /etc/grub.conf is : root (hd0,1) install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (fd0) quit I am not sure whether it is correct. So I just manually created another floppy disk, by : # cd /usr/lib/grub/ # dd if=stage1 of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 count=1 1+0 records in 1+0 records out # dd if=stage2 of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 seek=1 153+1 records in 153+1 records out Now I can boot with this disk, but it only show me the grub prompt, I can boot my Linux with: Grub> root (hd1,0) Grub> kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb3 vga=791 initrd /boot/initrd Grub> boot Now I am really confused, it seems that Grub boot floppy can not detect the menu.lst file. Can somebody help? Thanks a lot! -- Yongtao Yang email: yongtao.yang@telia.com
