Hi,
I have a 2 computer intranet :-) at home. One of them runs only linux and is configured as a server of httpd, ftp, news, dns, mars, samba, etc. The other runs both linux and window$.
I run a small intranet with OS/2 & Linux on one machine and Win95 on the other. OS/2, to date I have not been able to get to communicate with Win95. My Linux machine on the other hand provides all the services that you mention plus it is the gateway to the internet via Apache as a proxy server. At any rate, if your window$ is Win95, then you will need to go into your (I'm taking for granted that you have samba configured correctly on your Linux box), Control Folder and open the network icon. Make sure that tcpip is in there as a protocol (that's the only way I could get it to work on my win machine). Also, make sure that Samba is in there as well. (I'm trying to pull all of this off the top of my head:-) You will need to make sure the default Client is set up for Microsoft networks. In your tcpip, you will need to set your gateway address (intranet address for your linux server). It is, also it is best to set up your IP address in tcpip to that of your wins machine. Since you have DNS set up, it wouldn't hurt to enable dns lookup:-)
When i boot linux in the client machine all works ok. All shared stuff is
Linux is very easy to set up as far as sharing goes, but to get Win to cooperate, you will have to make sure you have file/print share enabled. Also, I found it to work best to set up Win with user share. The only real problem with that is that you will have to name a server for password authentication. It usually works best to use the name of the machine you are trying to share directories with:-) (But that part, I haven't yet got to work in Linux:-( BTW, with my present configuration, I can telnet into linux, but not into win95:-( But, I can access the web page on Win95:-)
shared, i can telnet, ftp, lynx, etc. into it. When i boot window$, i can not do anything. The exact simptom in telnet is that the login goes ok and i get the prompt from bash. When i do an ls in an empty directory it goes ok. If i try do ls the / directory i stop getting echo. If i Ctrl-D the keystroke gets to the
Ctrl-D is the linux logout hot key and for some reason it always kills the connection:-0But one thing you may want to check on your telnet terminal is in your preferences. Make sure your buffers is a fairly high number. Also, check your terminal emulation and there are some other buttons that you can select.
I think that if there is very little data to cross the network all is ok. If the ammount of data goes over some quantity, which i don't know, the server stops sending data to the client.
Checking my Samba logs (log.win95) apparently win95 wants to keep the window at 2998 (or some strange number like that). Also, come to think of it, there are a couple of "text" files in /windows that does have an effect as well. Look for "networks" and make sure your machines are all listed. Also believe it or not, there is a hosts file as well.
