Robert, Yes I can confirm this works, fantastic. I have built/installed root-portal (from source) and it had installed a file "root-portal_applet.gnorba" in /opt/gnome/etc/CORBA/services. I moved the file to /etc/opt/gnome/CORBA/services, removed the /opt/gnome/etc/CORBA directory and then created the symbolic links you said below. Works fine then. I expect anyone building gnome applets will get this problem with SuSE 7.2 - if you get the "Unable to reach the control-center" warning, this is the way to fix it. I've tracked this down a little further and I'm getting the following printed to the console when I'm running the control center:

** WARNING ** : Unable to reach the control-center

I had a similar problem crop up this weekend. Installed SuSE 7.2 last week. And it had been using my old GNOME configuration (from SuSE 6.4) just fine. Then I added a new applet to the GNOME Panel. Lost all applets and the Control Center!

Here's the solution I came up with... rm /etc/CORBA rm /opt/gnome/etc/CORBA ln -s /etc/opt/gnome/CORBA /etc/CORBA ln -s /etc/opt/gnome/CORBA /opt/gnome/etc/CORBA

I did check the directories /etc/CORBA and /opt/gnome/etc/CORBA before deleting. They were both empty. If you have files in there. Move the files to /etc/opt/gnome/CORBA first!

CORBA is how GNOME embeds the stuff into the Panel and Control Center. I had trouble about 6 months ago with CORBA being setup wrong. That's what made me look for the directories. With the symlinks, the Panel and Control Center were back to normal.
