Nah, thats not the way to do it. What service did you register with? There are many, but probably the most reliable is www.dyndns.org - free for up to 5 machines.
AND they have "clients" that can run and watch your IP and if it ever changes they update the dyndns.org database.
Most of these clients will work with many different dynamic IP servers. The client I use is called ez-ipupdate http://www.gusnet.cx/proj/ez-ipupdate/ which I just start when the machine starts with a line in /etc/init.d/boot.local that reads : /usr/local/bin/ez-ipupdate -d -c /root/dyndns.conf
