Well having done what I outlined I have had no problems with the updater at all. What's the point of having it on the desktop unless it can be made to work? Perhaps the entire desktop should be dropped and everything should be done from the consol? Sure to boost the size of the user group.

Amen to that brother John. All of this should be improving in the next release. And, don't forget, you can still run the updater applet manually by choosing menu->system->desktop applet->opensuse Updater. The only reason I run zypper or yast is they provide better dependency resolution options than you get with updater. I've used them all, it's just a preference. Though, not killing updater from running at login wasn't an option. Keep the faith. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
