I am inclined to agree, but I of course run rsync over ssh. I still don't know how much that really matters, despite all of the discussion of turning off encryption. And, of course, I'm too lazy to benchmark it ;-)

Depends on the network speed. Up to Gigabit, I think a relatively modern computer can fill the pipe using ssh. I would have to actually measure speed to be fully sure.
