You NEED mdadm in your initramfs (unless you have a v1 mirror). Bear in mind, though, that I have no mdadm.conf that I can find on my system, and it boots off my mirror fine. The normal sequence of events on a raid boot is for the initramfs to be loaded, mdadm is called to assemble the arrays, and then a switchroot is done to the "/" mount. Because linux can no longer assemble arrays itself, that is why the initramfs is needed for anything other said v1 mirror - said mirror looking to the kernel like any other normal file system.
