"Initialize" isn't necessarily the same as "format". :-)
Is is *NOT* about formatting the storage area. Those devices require the reading and storage of the admin-fingerprint, and subsequently (up to) five different user-fingerprints. So, it is the software, provided in a separate partition, that is microsoft-ony. In their documentation, they state explicitly that Apple-users, need to to the initialisation on a Windows machine. Linux is not mentioned (besides that it is compatiple). Ofcourse i contacted their help-desk, but they are totally not-interested. Which surprised me even more, as it is a pilot for all of my colleges of my ministry of their product.... So, we're not talking about hundred, thousand, or even ten-thousand of their item....
