The firewall is disabled on both server and desktop. Tried a reboot of
both also.
The manual mount gives me this:
desktop1:/ # mount server1:/usr/local /usr/local
mount.nfs: mount to NFS server 'server1:/usr/local' failed: RPC Error:
Program not registered

OK, so portmap was not running because that package wasn't installed on the server. I installed it, then ran into portmap[20840]: cannot bind udp: Address already in use type errors.
I managed to kill something that was using port 111 and both nfs and portmap are now running, but I still have the same problem.
You still have to mount the share manually on the client, and if it fails, look in the logs.
My guess is that you have to restart firewalls, to make them aware of portmap.
