I have just discovered that in KDE3 you can imbeed any windows into the desktop. The windows then has no borders, cannot be moved, shown behind all other windows, disappears from the taskbar and window selector. Like as in this screenshot:

Of note that the application have not to be specially written to allow for that.
What's the purpose of Plasma then?
Damn! You got the KDE4 devs there! The sole purpose of Plasma was to have an embedded window on the desktop and now you can do the same on other desktops as well... ...yet maybe google helps you find http://userbase.kde.org/Plasma and maybe you remember that you were told that a redesign and rewrite of kicker and the other desktop items was needed to get rid of the hackish and unmaintainable code that the kicker and other items of the desktop consisted of in KDE3. There is e.g. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=127466 years old, lot of votes yet no fix yet although it is allegedly so easy to maintain (i.e. to fix bugs) that almost bug-free code. I could not do my work with kicker not showing up anymore! Yet I had different wallpapers for each desktop! And there are many other unfixed bugs and unfulfilled feature requests regarding kicker, lots of crashes etc. <https://bugs.kde.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=advanced&short_desc_type=allwordssubstr&short_desc=&product=kicker&long_desc_type=substring&long_desc=&bug_file_loc_type=allwordssubstr&bug_file_loc=&keywords_type=allwords&keywords=&bug_status=RESOLVED&resolution=UNMAINTAINED&emailassigned_to1=1&emailtype1=substring&email1=&emailassigned_to2=1&emailreporter2=1&emailcc2=1&emailtype2=substring&email2=&bugidtype=include&bug_id=&votes=&chfieldfrom=&chfieldto=Now&chfieldvalue=&cmdtype=doit&order=Importance&field0-0-0=noop&type0-0-0=noop&value0-0-0=> Have fun maintaining (i.e. fixing and not just keeping building).
