Hi people, Is anybody using DLT tapes with Suse 9.2? Are you having any problem? My kernel is 2.6.8-24.16, my DLT 7000, my scsi card qla1280 and aha1960 (with both scsi cards I got the same behavior).
I have an external Quantum DLT7000 which I normally use to backup my windows workstation. Just for fun I started an older server with an Adaptec 2940UW controller that I could use to connect the DLT.
In short: it works without any problems.
The problem is: I can do "tar -cvf /dev/nst0 ..." with small files (50Mb) without problems, for big files the "tar -c .." work fine only if I defined a bigger block. Then the problem is after writing (for example a file of 700MB): "mt -f /dev/nst0 eod" : results in /dev/nst0: input/output error "mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf 1": results in /dev/nst0: input/output error or if I'm at eod and I do a rewind I got the same result The syslog tells: ".....resetting scsi bus .... st0: Error 40000 (sugg. bt 0x0, driver bt 0x0, host bt 0x4)"
I had those errors when I connected the DLT to U160 compatible adapters. It just wouldn't run reliably when connected to an Adaptec 29160N. Then I found out that it was NOT an LVD compatible, it was a single-sided and very happy with UW-SCSI.
Just to test, I installed mt-st.07-421, I define the /etc/stinit.def following Quantum Manual but I got the same errors. Anybody has any idea?
Try a different controller and maybe another terminator. If possible you could try the external connector of your Adaptec controller, it should only be UW-SCSI, not LVD. That would probably reduce the bus speed to ultra scsi.
I think it isn't the hardware because I got the same errors with: 1) AHA19160 Ultra SCSI SE HVD, DLT 7000 SUN SE HVD Fast SCSI. 2) QLA1280 automatically autosets for the drive connected, Quantum DLT 7000 Fast SCSI Diff HVD And I used on Irix that QLA1280 with that DLT without problems. But I'm a litle new with linux, so I'm not sure if the problem is the st module, mt or what. Mariela
