I wasn't able to get the mount command to properly work with the -t
This is strange, did you use the right command? If you use the -t option to mount a drive, you have to specify the device and mount point, for example: mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom
Data is the only type of CD I need to mount, so there is no need to keep it as auto in fstab.
You might consider setting up another line in fstab for your cdrom drive with a different mount point but set the filesystem to udf. This will allow you to mount data CD's that are written in packet write mode.
