Do you get your users via network nis, ldap whatever? Could be that kdm pops up before all users are available. So maybe login fails because you try too early rather because it's the first try.
No. This is a known problem.The second character is not accepted unless you wait a couple of seconds after typing the first one. And it only affects the _first_ login session.
On bugzilla I've read that first login fails for non-root only. Is this still the case?
