[opensuse] No direct rendering with ATI driver in 12.1

I have a system with a radeon HD4250 card. I managed to successfully load the proprietary ATI fglrx driver in 12.1 using the atiupgrade script with one exception - direct rendering is not on. GLXINFO reports direct rendering: No. It shows the server vendor as ATI and the opengl version string as 1.4 (2.1 (3.3.11251 Compatibility Profile Context)). I know the card is capable of direct rendering. Is there a way to turn it on short of reinstalling 12.1 and starting from scratch?
