9.0 has an issue with my DPT 2865U3 RAID controller that 8.x does not. Under 8.2, I can attach anything to this controller and the dpt_i2o module handles it fine. Under 9.0, unless all disks are installed in a hardware RAID array (meaning, a RAID array set up by the controller so that SuSE sees multiple physical disks as one disk), dpt_i2o under 9.0 sees every SCSI disk twice. So, absent a hardware RAID array, two SCSI disks are seen as /dev/sda, /dev/sdb (a copy of /dev/sda), /dev/sdc and /dev/sdd. I reported this when 9.0 was first released, and I had some conversations with Hartmut Meyer about it, but I do not believe anything was done to fix it. This weekend I had one of the drives in the RAID array die, so I (foolishly) dropped in a spare SCSI drive as an add-in until the RAID member drive was replaced. SuSE 9.0 freaked and started rebooting spontaneously. Removing the new drive did not fix anything. Did this once on 8.1 and had no problems. So, I wiped everything clean, installed 8.2, restored data from backups, and now I'm wondering whether I can update to 9.1. I filled out a problem report on SuSE's web site when 9.0 was released. We've put several DPT controllers in client machines. All are still running 8.2/8.1, but some are due for an update/repurposing etc. How can I find out if this was fixed in 9.1, and if not, what more can I do to get it fixed? BTW, when Adaptec bought DPT, all they did was change the banner in the BIOS and relabel these DPT cards as 2100s- and 3200s-family controllers. These cards are still current product for Adaptec. They are pretty slick, very fast and (under lots of other OS's) play nicely. Thanks, Mark -- _______________________________________________________________ L.
