RTFM. $ apropos nfs shows up idmapd (8) - NFSv4 ID <-> Name Mapper and rpc.idmapd (8) - NFSv4 ID <-> Name Mapper Of course if the names on the server and the client are the same there isn't a problem :-) That's not as dumb as it sounds if you make use of a networked ID database service like Yellow pages or a LDAP service in a mixed Linux/Windows setting. Both of which are extensively documented.
