I run across this time and time again trying to get sound to work. alsa-firmware is installed. What is missing when a sound device exists, but cannot be used, as $SUBJECT describes, alsamixer missing master, front, surround, center, pcm, line, and the rest? Is there some AMD/ATI firmware from some optional repo required? e.g. on 42.1: # cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [Generic ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic HD-Audio Generic at 0xfeb60000 irq 16 1 [HDMI ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI HDA ATI HDMI at 0xfeb64000 irq 41 # aplay -vv -Dplughw:0 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav (produces sound through analog pin jack) # aplay -vv -Dplughw:1 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav aplay: main:722: audio open error: No such file or directory # aplay -l # AMD Kaveri **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 0: ALC1150 Analog [ALC1150 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: ALC1150 Digital [ALC1150 Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 Re the aplay -l output, https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Audio_troubleshooting says for in 50-sound.conf 'For the "id" to use, see the output of "aplay -l".' Where/what exactly in the above output is the "id"? Including 'options snd index=1,0' somewhere in /etc/modprobe.d/ swaps the two main devices, but has no impact on $SUBJECT. alsa-info.sh output: http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/Linux/Sound/alsa-info.txt-os421-a88x-easyst setup_default_volume has no --help nor man page. What is its '-f 0' option specifying? PS: Problem is identical on same machine in 13.1 and 13.2. It's only almost the same problem on same machine in Debian Stretch. Somehow, Debian's VLC offers a manual selection of about 4X as many devices as VLC in 42.1, including HDMI, which actually works. However, all other Debian sounds goto the analog output. Neither does system/desktop settings -> multimedia show any offer of HDMI, only pulsaudio, alsa, and 2-3 others. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
