Try using LPRng instead of CUPS.
Or use CUPS in conjunction with Foomatic and Ghostscript. This is what I do. FWIW, I use the Gimp-print Ghostscript IJS driver.
CUPS is nice, but it manages quite badly the canon 4000 printer. If I print a page having text and photos, the text is printed fast and crisp: perfect. But the photos are horrible: I can't describe it, like high contrast low ink. If I use the gimp driver then it prints quite OK, but even the text prints much slower. LPRng in suse 7.3 printed similarly to the gimp driver in CUPS. This has been so in suse 8.1 and 8.2 I don't know to whom could I email a scanned page of print output, so that someboy takes charge and corrects it. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
