Hi all,
I'm using an old computer as a Linux box with an internal ISA modem in it. My new computer, which runs on Windows XP :-(, has only PCI slots on board. Both machines are connected on a LAN. I was wondering if it was possible (I know it is, but not how) to use the modem in my Linux box via Windows XP over the network.
Yes it is possible (or should I say "/of course/ it is possible") . This is called IP forwarding/masquerading. There are two good HOWTOs on the subject available on www.linuxdoc.org: the Masquerading-Simple-HOWTO and the Masquerading-HOWTO (not sure about the latter's name). I used the first one yesterday and it worked within five minutes (similar setup, no XP though, ha!). One thing not discussed in these docs is setting up the routing. It's not difficult and you may already know it, but this List is probably willing to help if you have questions about that ;) You should also setup dial on demand on the Linux box. There is a configuration option in YaST to enable dial on demand, enable it, as well as the option to enable IP forwarding (i.e. to use the box as a router). If you enabled dial on demand but haven't setup your modem yet you can use susewvdial to do so. Regards, Martijn
