I then tried xlsfonts -l and the machine locked! Not even mouse movement! I was trying an ssh session from another machine, when it recovered.

Basil in an earlier post today reminded me that Patrick had suggested a fix but as I said in reply I have not followed that up. I just locked 42.2 to the older LO version that foes what I want, which is pretty trivial in the wider scheme of things as in using BS Charter in my small number of LO documents.
