Hi,

I just went to online update in Leap 42.3 and see there is one for Firefox from 52.8.0 to 60.0. That seems like quite a jump and again its surprising to see a major version change pushed as an update partway through a release's lifecycle.
I expect that updating Firefox is going to cause me grief to get it back the way I like it at a minimum, and perhaps break some of my add-ons.
I expect to have to deal with grief like that when I update my distro version, not at random intervals in between. If I wanted system that needed continuous tender loving care, I would choose Tumbleweed.
So what's going on?
First LibreOffice, now Firefox?
When you check very carefully you will see that there is an update to 52.8 since a few days marked as security and that the Firefox 60 upgrade is marked as recommended at the moment.
I had checked carefully and that's why I saw it before it tried to upgrade without warning. Like Carlos, I think it should have been listed as optional, not recommended, and I think it should have had a different name, such as Firefox-60.
You may select to not update Firefox to 60 while still being secure.
That being said there is no choice to update to 60 on 42.3 for security reasons soon now as it's impossible to maintain all security fixes w/o upstream support. So you have the choice to block the update and have no migration issues becoming insecure or to do the update in the end. Unfortunately there is basically nothing inbetween.
I don't understand. Both 60 and 52.8 are currently ESR, but there doesn't now seem to be a method to provide updates via opensuse to the 52.8 since openSUSE has conflated the two versions under a single identifier. Is that true? And if so, why? (insert frustrated emoticon here) As I understand it, Leap 15 will be released shortly, before the next FF 52 release in June. So I really don't understand why 42.3 could not be kept on FF 52 ESR at least until 15 is released with FF 60 ESR and indeed until FF 52 end of life. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
